Roger Penske buys Saturn

Team Owner Roger Penske adds to his legacy and bought Saturn from GM today. Penske, whose NASCAR team uses the Dodge Charger, will continue to use GM to produce the Saturn for the next two years. They will be seeking another manufacturer to produce the Saturn Brand.

"We will have a supply of vehicles for at least two years with existing brands, and we have been in discussions during this diligence period with a number of manufacturers on a worldwide basis," Penske said Friday morning. "We would expect to have a lineup going forward, which would be manufactured by a worldwide partner."

Saturn will be owned by the Penske Automotive Group. Penske said he hopes retired Chrysler President Tom LaSorda, who was advising Penske on the deal, will have a role with the company.

The deal is expected to close in the late third quarter. A price was not disclosed.

Penske has made a name for himself by taking struggling companies and fixing them, such as Hertz Truck Leasing in the 1980s and Detroit Diesel in the 1990s.

In 1999, he invested $83 million into United Auto Group Inc., now called the Penske Automotive Group. The group is the second-largest auto dealer in the United States and is the sole U.S. distributor of the Smart car.

Penske said he would not be combining Saturn and Smart car operations.

Turning the heat up in the Food Network Kitchen

If you could wake up tomorrow and have any career, what would it be? I would either be a sports announcer or a Celebrity Chef with a prime time cooking show. As I have said over and over again, I have a bit of an obsession with the Food Network. My TiVo is full of cooking shows and I have a huge crush on Chef Bobby Flay.

When I found out that ESPN's Jamie Little is going to appear as a guest judge on this Sundays Iron Chef America, I must say that I was a bit jealous. Not only is Jamie absolutely beautiful, she has my ultimate dream job and NOW she is appearing on my favorite show, surrounded by my favorite Chefs. If Bobby Flay gets challenged, it means he will be cooking for Jamie & the other two judges. Unless the secret ingredient is a Rattle Snake, I will envy her for quite some time!

Although it is already queued on TiVo, I will certainly be tuning in on Sunday night.

The ESPN Press Release:
For almost a year, ESPN’s Jamie Little has kept a secret, but very soon she won’t have to worry about it any more. On Sunday, June 7, at 10 p.m. ET, Little, who works as a pit reporter on ESPN’s coverage of NASCAR, will appear as a guest judge on the popular Food Network program Iron Chef America.

The program pits a challenging chef against one of the network’s star chefs in a one-hour contest staged in “Kitchen Stadium.” The chefs must make a multi-course meal using a “secret ingredient” that they only learn about moments before the contest begins. Their work is then judged by a three-person panel to determine a winner.

Little taped her appearance in New York City nearly a year ago and was sworn to secrecy. “I even had to sign documentation that I would not reveal what the secret ingredient was,” she said.

How about a hint?

“The secret ingredient will not let anybody down,” she said. “It’s definitely going to be exciting, funny and maybe even gross to some. It’s the type of secret ingredient that everybody joked with me I would get if I went on the show, and I did, so that should build up some suspense.

“It’s been quite awhile since we shot that show, and I don’t think I’ve had that secret ingredient since then,” she said. “Ten different dishes of that one ingredient kind of wears it out. It made me over it.”

But that’s not to say Little didn’t enjoy her experience. “It was so fun. All the personalities that you see on the show every week were there, and it was a little intimidating. I was sitting between food critics who are on that show on a regular basis, and then there was me who represents ESPN.

“The two chefs we had on the show were a lot of fun, and I think people will be surprised by the outcome,” she said. “It’s tough – it was nerve-wracking because the fate of the chef lies on us three judges, and you feel bad that someone has to lose. But I was as honest as I could be

“It’s so much more than food. The whole timed element is so exciting, and of course covering racing, I love things that are timed and fast, and these guys are timed, they have to be fast, and they have to be so accurate and so perfect,” she said. “It’s all about not just the flavors but the presentation, the hard work that goes into it, being unique in the way that they serve it and the things they come up with. So I learned a lot.”

So come on Jamie – what was the secret ingredient?

“Thank goodness I’m not allergic to anything and I’m not one to say no to trying new things, because this definitely tested that,” she said. “It was a great experience overall. I was thrilled to be part of it.”

In addition to the original airing, the program is scheduled to re-air June 11 at 8 p.m., June 13 at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. and Sept. 12 at 10 p.m.

NASCAR blogging

So, what happens when a Fashionista spends 5 days in Vegas? The mind goes blank, then it goes a bit crazy. While a few hours ago, I had writers block, now it is the opposite.

I came across something last night that our buddy @ The Daly Planet posted. It is a great article about a certain selection of NASCAR Bloggers who will get press passes for races. I have to say, I have mixed emotions about this.

We have had MANY years of Hard Cards and Hot Passes between us. I have personally been to over 50 races and this is what caused us to create NASCAR Fashionistas. We started it at a whim last summer and Darlynn and I have turned it into Racing Fashionistas.

So I must ask myself....what is going to happen??? Maybe we will be one of the lucky few to become part of NASCAR's new campaign. Part of me pats them on the back. I love the fact that they see the importance of Social Networking. The other part of me wants to run screaming.

When we started this, we made a tight circle of true friends (whom we have never met face to face, lol). Then, there are our "frenemies"-those who try to make a name off our name, those who copy everything we have worked so hard to create; who are always 10 steps behind us. Let's get one thing straight, copying may be seen as a compliment to some- but stealing one's creative work is a stab in the heart.

As I said above, the one thing that sets us apart is our inside access. If this is available to the "others", what happens then? Will we lose our touch? Will we get lost in the shuffle?

I would love to hear our readers thoughts on this. Again, I love that NASCAR is opening it up to others. I think as long as it is done correctly, it can be super successful. Darlynn and I own a social marketing company so maybe they will bring us on as correspondents??? Hey, we DO live in Daytona Beach....just saying NASCAR! We look forward to hearing from you :)

NASCAR fan gets surprise from Daytona 500 winner

from Daytona Beach News Journal

DAYTONA BEACH -- A Daytona 500 champion left his mark on Karen Hurd's driveway before screeching away through a cloud of smoke on Tuesday.

Standing a few feet away from the burnout marks, Hurd called Matt Kenseth's exit from her Indigo Lakes neighborhood "a hoot."

"I had no idea that Matt was in town," said Hurd, 51, who greeted the champ at her front door with her husband, Bob. "It was great; I was so excited."

Hurd, an account ticket holder, was randomly selected by Daytona International Speedway staff to receive a "goody bag" and a special visit from Kenseth in a customer appreciation stunt that attracted a crowd of media to the Hurds' lawn about 10:30 a.m.

She was informed of the visit about a week ago but did not know who would be making the delivery, said Andrew Booth, a Speedway spokesman. In addition to receiving Speedway swag, Hurd got Weatherly Tower seats for the July 3rd Nationwide Series, Subway Jalapeno 250.

"It's just about thanking the fans and we thought it was a pretty unique experience to take a driver to somebody's doorstep," Booth said.

Kenseth arrived in Daytona Beach on Tuesday morning and drove to the Hurds' house in a silver Stage 3 ROUSH Mustang. It was his first time making a ticket delivery to a race fan, he said.

"I think the more time you get to spend with the fans, the better," he said.

Hurd, a race fan for 13 years, said Kenseth seemed smaller in person than she imagined he would be. She congratulated him on his big win in February and chatted with him for a few minutes about what it's like to race in a car that can reach 140 degrees.

It was the first of many events Kenseth was booked for during his visit on Tuesday, which included racing high-performance karts with media, meeting ticket sales staff and fans to help promote the Coke Zero 400 on July 4.

Robin Braig, Daytona International Speedway president, said Kenseth's appearances helps promote the race.

"This is just one way of getting the word out here and in this tough economy we need to sell tickets and there's nothing better than having our star come in to help," Braig said.

Excellent story, great promotion and refreshing to report on something exciting in Daytona!

Dashing Ryan Reynolds slated as grand marshall in Pocono

From Pocono website
Actor Ryan Reynolds, star of the upcoming comedy THE PROPOSAL,
to Serve as Grand Marshal for Pocono 500

The ProposalRyan Reynolds, star of the upcoming Touchstone Pictures comedy THE PROPOSAL, has been named the Grand Marshal for the June 7, 2009 Pocono 500, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Pocono Raceway (2:00PM ET on TNT). As Grand Marshal, Reynolds will participate in a number of pre-race activities, including attending the drivers meeting, participating in driver introductions and giving the most famous command in motorsports, “Gentleman, start your engines.”

THE PROPOSAL, in theaters on June 19, is a comedy about what happens when a high-powered book editor Margaret (SANDRA BULLOCK) faces deportation to her native Canada. The quick-thinking exec declares that she’s actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew (RYAN REYNOLDS), who she’s tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family (MARY STEENBURGEN, CRAIG T. NELSON, BETTY WHITE) and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences. Director Anne Fletcher came to THE PROPOSAL following her highly successful "27 Dresses.” Her directorial debut was with the 2006 surprise smash "Step Up." More information about the movie is available at

Prior to his starring role in THE PROPOSAL, Canadian born Reynolds recently starred in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “Adventureland,” “Definitely-Maybe,” ”Smokin Aces,” “The Amityville Horror” and “Van Wilder.” He is married to actress/model Scarlett Johansson.

“It’s an honor to have Ryan join us for the Pocono 500 and serve as the Grand Marshal,” said Brandon Igdalsky, President of Pocono Raceway. “Ryan is one of the brightest young stars in Hollywood and we are looking forward to having him at the track on June 7.”

The bigger question?? Is he bringing Scarlett Johannson??

The June 7th Pocono 500 begins at 2:00PM ET with pre-race activities beginning at 1:00PM. Tickets are still available for the Pocono 500 online at or by phone at 1-800-RACEWAY.

NASCAR Diversity Interns begin their Race Season

DAYTONA BEACH -- Thirteen students from across the U.S. were selected for the 2009 NASCAR Diversity Internship Program and started work Monday on the 10-week, paid summer internships.

In addition to NASCAR corporate offices in Daytona Beach, Charlotte, and Concord, companies participating are Catalyst Public Relations, Daytona International Speedway, International Speedway Corp., Joe Gibbs Racing, Just Marketing International, Octagon, The SPEED Channel and The 909 Group.

Just a gentle reminder, females and fashionistas fall into this category so we look forward to reporting on some of this class!

The students, hometown and school are Gabriela Acuna, Peachtree City, Ga., Georgia College and State University; Kara Adams, Ashburn, Va., Howard University; Arrionne Allen, Mauldin, S.C., Hampton University/Indiana University; Anim Amersingh, Trinidad and Tobago, Morgan State University; Erica Anderson, Claremont, Calif., Florida A&M University; Jaime Bowman, Brooklyn, N.Y., Howard University; Reina Carson, Albuquerque, N.M., Bethune Cookman University; Brenda Kittles, Bowie, Md., Winston-Salem State University; Courtney McKnight, Frederick, Md., Johnson C. Smith University; De'Marcus Miller, Charlotte, N.C., Winston-Salem State/High Point; Kris Rincon, Agua Dulce, Calif., University of Arizona; Rodrigo Sanchez, Mexico City, Austin (Texas) Community College; and Sydney Snow, Jacksonville, North Carolina A&T University.

Tune Up Tuesday, Oh Dave-you've come back to me!

This is starting to become one of my favorite features....maybe just because we have been getting some great music out on shelves! This week is not difference as Dave Matthews Band releases it next album today. According to Amazon: Produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), Big Whiskey has been hailed by Rolling Stone as the group’s "heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally," which went on to note: "Throughout, Carter Beauford beats out elaborate, propulsive groves; bassist Stefan Lessard lays down Flea-style funk bass lines; violinist Boyd Tinsley plays cresting, intense runs; and Matthews mirrors Moore’s saxophone lines with scatlike singing." Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet… Highlights include the funk-rock rave-up 'Shake Me Like a Monkey,' the stirring ballad 'Lying in the Hands of God,' the swampy rocker 'Alligator Pie (Cockadile),' radio-friendly fare like 'Why I Am,' which features playful horns over a solid rock riff and a hooky chorus, and 'Funny the Way It Is,' which parlays a subtle intro into a soaring, syncopated anthem."
In honor of this stations like Fuse, HD Net and others have been doing some great DMB live concerts. Dave is like my valium, especially his first album which is my absolute favorites.
Other tune ups of interest: 311, Dwight Yoakam and Franz Ferdinand

Runway Monday

Today is the start of the hurricane season! I am obsessed this week for finding the perfect rain boot. Once unnecessary, now after 25" of rain I will be ready for any storm. What we are lusting for:

The holy grail of rain boots-Burberry $195.00 Neiman Marcus

A more affordable option,(although I am considering not paying my car payment for the more sillier than having 5 pairs of Uggs in Florida that we each own)

Capelli New York from $39.99
